Political message in Music

F*** Tha Police by N.W.A

A song that addresses the discrimination that people of color specifically african americans face from police authority.  Mistreatment and unfair accusations that are made because of their race.  I read from wikipedia that the inspiration came from Dr Dre and Easy E’s experience with the authorities after a paint ball drive by shootings.  In my opinion, I think the song loses all of it’s effectiveness of creating awareness of discrimination given the circumstance of the situation the song was derived from.  The arrest of Dr Dre and Easy E for paint balling innocent bystanders being the catalyst for the inspiration of the song makes it an inappropriate vehicle to communicate the message of wrong doing in the criminal justice realm.  I think the song would have been more effective if the lyrics of the song was brought on by an actual encounter with the authorities that proved to be an unlawful treatment of african americans. Instead, they are not completely innocent of wrong doing and brought upon themselves an arrest by the police. If their sentence or punishment was beyond the damage that was done by their arrest, maybe by elaborating on that experience would have made for a more effective message instead of some ill beats.

Lyrics:

Right about now NWA court is in full effect.
Judge Dre presiding in the case of NWA versus the police department.
Prosecuting attourneys are MC Ren Ice Cube and Eazy muthafuckin E.
Order order order. Ice Cube take the muthafuckin stand.
Do you swear to tell the truth the whole truth
and nothin but the truth so help your black ass?

Why don’t you tell everybody what the fuck you gotta say?

Fuck tha police
Comin straight from the underground
Young nigga got it bad cuz I’m brown
And not the other color so police think
They have the authority to kill a minority…
