Protest Music

HillOne very known artist that makes very sound social statements within her music is Lauryn Hill. Her most powerful cd she made was her debut cd The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which was released in 1998. Almost every song she recorded on that cd consisted of or was related to a social message.  For instance the song everything is everything… was probably the most social related song on that album. In that song she spoke mainly about the youth and some of the difficulties they experiece on a regular basis. One of the main topics in the song that stood out to me was in the line when she stated a issue about reaching a dream that appears so close at hand but is never really attainable, then she goes on to speak of how “the ones on top won’t make it stop, because they’re convinced that they might fall.” This is a very strong social issue and this song is appropriate for it because it ties in harmoniously with many other issues stated in the song that youth deal with as far as trying to exceed ten steps ahead of their dreams but constantly being pushed back five.
